It can be exhausting and overwhelming, especially for untrained caregivers who may not be fully equipped to handle this responsibility.
In order to avoid caregiver burnout, here are some tips from our experts:
Recognize the warning signs. Caregiver burnout occurs when you are too stressed and exhausted. Some of the warning signs include irritability, sleep difficulties, getting sick easily, withdrawal from family and friends, apathy, and changes in appetite. Once you notice these warning signs, make sure that you make some changes immediately. Don’t wait until you feel too overwhelmed with your tasks.
Take some time for yourself. Caregiving can take up your time, however, you shouldn’t let it consume your life either. Take some time for yourself – go out with friends, exercise, go on a trip, or participate in activities that you enjoy.
Learn to accept things that you can’t change. Forcing to change situations or things that cannot be changed will only frustrate and stress you out further. For example, you may feel frustrated that your loved one’s health isn’t getting better, but sometimes, there’s nothing that you or other professionals can do. It may be hard, but you have to learn to accept that there are some things that you just can’t change. Here is an excerpt from Reinhold Niebuhr’s Serenity Prayer: “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.”
Ask for help. You don’t have to do everything on your own – ask for help from your relatives, friends, and other professionals. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness or giving up, instead, it is a way for you to provide the best care possible for your loved one.
